Indicators and conditions
How strategy conditions are built from indicators, operators and timeframes, and which indicators the strategy builder offers.
A strategy bot opens, averages and closes deals when its conditions are met. Each condition compares an indicator with a number or with another indicator, for example "RSI (14) is less than 30" or "Close price crosses above EMA (200)". The same catalogue of 150+ indicators and patterns is used by the strategy builder and by the agent, so the conditions the agent drafts for you can be opened and edited in the builder.
How a condition is built
A condition has three parts:
- The indicator on the left, for example Relative Strength Index (14), with its timeframe.
- The operator: how the two sides are compared.
- The right side: a number, or a second indicator with its own timeframe.
Not every combination is allowed. Each indicator accepts only its own operators and can be compared only with compatible indicators: an oscillator that moves between 0 and 100 is compared with a number or another oscillator, a moving average with the price or another average. The builder offers only valid choices, and the agent checks its drafts against the same rules.
Patterns (candlestick patterns such as Hammer or chart patterns such as Double Bottom) work differently: they are either present on the bar or not, so they take no operator and no value.
A price indicator (Open, High, Low, Close) can be compared with a fixed number only when the bot trades a single coin. With several coins one number would mean a different thing for each of them.
Operators
| Operator | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Cross Above | The left side was below the right side and moved above it on this bar |
| Cross Below | The left side was above the right side and moved below it on this bar |
| Greater Than, Less Than | The left side is above or below the right side right now |
| Greater or Equal, Less or Equal | The same, including equality |
| Equal, Not Equal | Exact match or mismatch, useful mostly for whole-number values |
"Cross" fires once at the moment of crossing. "Greater" and "Less" stay true for as long as the relation holds, so they suit filters such as "only when the price is above EMA 200".
Combining conditions
Conditions of one order are joined with AND, OR and NOT:
- AND: all conditions must be true.
- OR: at least one of them.
- NOT: the condition must be false.
A typical entry is a signal plus a filter: "RSI (14) crosses above 30 AND Close is greater than EMA (200)".
Where conditions are used
Conditions can drive four parts of a bot:
- Entry: when to open a deal (the base order).
- Averaging: when to add an averaging order to an open deal.
- Take profit: when to close in profit, instead of a fixed percentage.
- Stop loss: when to close at a loss, instead of a fixed percentage.
Timeframes and triggers
Every indicator in a condition has a timeframe: 1m, 5m, 15m, 30m, 1h, 2h, 4h, 6h, 12h, 1d, 1w or 1M. You can mix them, for example a 15-minute signal filtered by a daily trend.
Conditions are always calculated on closed bars of their own timeframe, so a half-formed candle never triggers a signal. The trigger type of an order and its Bar TF decide when the rule is checked:
- Once per bar: the rule is checked each time the bars of the condition timeframes close, and it fires at most once per Bar TF bar.
- Once per bar close: the rule is checked only when a Bar TF bar closes. Condition timeframes lower than the Bar TF use their last closed bar.
Timeframes checked together should fit into the largest of them a whole number of times. 4h and 6h bars close together only once every 12 hours.
Ask the agent
Which indicators are good for catching an oversold bounce on BTC 1h?
Check this condition: RSI 14 on 1h crosses above 30 and the close is above EMA 200 on 4h
The agent explains indicators, proposes conditions for your idea and checks them before building a bot. Then run a backtest to see how the conditions would have traded.
